Emergency

In the event of an emergency such as fire, accident, or crime, first try to get help by calling out.

Fire

In the event of a fire, dial 119 directly. When your house is on fire, it is very difficult to stay calm. If you put a memo pad with your address, name, and nearby landmark near your home phone, you can calmly act even in an emergency.
■Procedure
<If a person who speaks Japanese is near you, ask for his or her help>
(1)Fire station: “This is 119, Nagakute Fire Station. A fire, or emergency?”
 →Clearly state “A fire.”
(2)Fire Station: “Where did it happen? Can I have your name?”
→State your address unhurriedly, starting with “Nagakute.” Also say your name clearly. If possible, mention some landmarks nearby.
(3)Fire station: “What is burning?”
Tell the kind of things which are on fire, like, a house, a car, a factory, hay, and so on.
(4)Fire station: “Is there any one who failed to escape? Is there anyone who is injured?”
Clearly tell, “Yes,” “No,” or “I don’t know.” When the fire engine approaches, wave your hand.
(5)Fire station: “Through which phone are you calling?”
If you are calling from home, tell the number of your home phone. If your are calling from a cellular phone, tell the number of your cell phone. If you are calling from a public phone, say “Public phone.”
(6)Hang up the phone and wait.
<In the case of a fire, if danger (fire or smoke) is approaching you, you should escape first before making a phone call.>

Traffic accident or crime

In the event of a traffic accident or crime, dial the police directly on 110.
■Example conversation
(1)Dial 110 directly
(2)Police: “What’s the matter?”
→Tell as much information as you can, like “A traffic accident took place in -----,” “There was a theft in -----,” or “There was a fight in -----.”
(3)Police: “Can I have your name?”
  →Answer your name clearly.
○How can we make an emergency call from a public phone?
→When you make a call to emergency staff, a fire station, or the police, pick up the receiver, push the “emergency button,” and make a phone call. The call is free of charge.
