Education
The nine-year Japanese compulsory education system comprises six years of elementary school and three years of junior high school. Students who compete compulsory education may continue on to high school and then to university.

1. Nursery school
In the event that parents or guardians cannot watch over their pre-school children because of work obligations or sickness, nursery schools will take care of them.
2. Elementary and junior high school
These two schools comprise Japan’s compulsory education system. Compulsory education does not apply to foreign nationals; however, the public education system is open to foreign nationals. Tuition and textbooks are free, but students must pay for school lunches.
Q When does a school year begin?
A school year starts in April and lasts until March of the next year.
